the sun begins to kiss the sky,
driving out the shadows
of the night;
a peaceful time,
its calm silence
broken
by the the thunderous crunch
of feet
upon the yellow carpet
of fallen leaves;
frantic eyes search
high upon the wooded hillside
for the beast
who has broken their reverie,
setting their heart to racing
with its morning calisthenics;
a gray squirrel darts
beneath a gray log
unseen by searching eyes,
so too the roots
of our day-to-day fears
