sometimes I stop seeing,
I miss you;
I stretch out with my eyes,
neglecting my mind,
ignoring my heart;

I lose sight of your demons -
your drivers and insecurities -
the whips they thrash at your back

I fall for your mask,
forgetting your better angels -
the face you hide from the world;

I forget to look beneath,
to see that light -
that beauty -
in your soul;

in my weakest moments,
I forget to see you

sunlight bleeds dawn onto the black night sky,
its light revealing the depth of our wound;

for we are a damaged people
shrouded in the sadness
of our collective hatred
of those things we choose not to understand;

can we heal this open hurt
whose roots are sown so deep?

with the warmth of love
and the gentle patience of time
we have a sliver of hope;

we must cling to it,
nurture it,
help it to grow
that we might realize
a happier dawn

understanding,
laughter until it hurts,
squeezes that last two days,
tears,
seeing beyond your mask,
the little things,
the big things,
your smile coming through the door,
knowing your thoughts,
feeling your feelings -
your generosity,
your forgiveness -
stumbling,
struggling,
moving forward,
sharing the load,
consistency, always
beating hearts

so much more
beyond these words
