New Day

a half moon
hides behind a veil
of hazy pre-dawn clouds -

the night
not yet ready
to cede power
to the day -

its strength wanes
as the birdsongs rise,
the sky purples
ahead of the sun's
fiery entrance;

night becomes
a hazy memory
in the blaze
of a new day

Sunrise

the impenetrable darkness
before the dawn
is a reminder
to keep going;

the blackness is complete,
yet the light still comes,
first in small hints
upon the horizon

then bold pinks
and fiery oranges
explode across the sky
driving out the night;

the sun always rises,
so too shall we

Rumination

how many more mornings
will the songs of the birds
climb out of the darkness;
how many more sunrises
will I watch explode
over the shadowed trees;

how much time do I have left,

not so much
that I can afford to take this -
or any - moment for granted;

appreciate the present
