Summer Rain

soft, sweet summer rains
are a memory of yesterday,
now there is only
the violence of the storm:

lightning crashing
through the sky,
cracks of thunder
shattering the calm,

winds whipping stinging drops
against window panes
bending tree limbs
to their breaking points;

we've lost all desire
to be caught in the rain
