Before Dawn

night's shadow
still bruises the sky
as invisible birds
begin their morning conversations;

a final firefly
explodes its small bulb of light
upon the scene -
a burst of white -
before it disappears
into the black;

a new day lurks
just beyond
the darkness

Calm

the soft sky
begins to take on
the brightness
of the rising sun,

the early morning
is quiet,
its peace
reaches into
the recesses
of the soul -
last night's restlessness
disappears -

the golden light
is warmth,
it provides a calm
you never know you need
until it washes over you

Natural Beauty

the moon
backlights a cloud
providing a bright halo
as it descends
to the west;

in the east
a tangerine aura
begins its rise
to claim the sky;

the creek trickles
a simple song
as autumn leaves
dance to the earth
on a gentle breeze;

far and wide
for a beauty
that will provide peace
